How to Slice a Pineapple
Before diving into our simple grilled pineapple recipe, let's talk about how to slice a pineapple effectively. Start by cutting off the top and bottom of the pineapple. Stand it upright and slice off the skin from top to bottom, following the pineapple's curve. Once the skin is removed, cut the pineapple into spears or rings, according to your preference.
How to Grill Pineapple
You’ll find dozens of variations of how to grill pineapple across the web. And I’ve tried most of the methods out there. Many are delicious while others become too complex and lose the simplicity that I love in the process of grilling pineapple. With food — and with many other things — simple can be better. Feel free to create your own variations and favorite methods from this recipe, but I would highly recommend a few tips:
- Cut the pineapple into spears about 1” thick. Cutting the pineapple too thin throws off the cooking process and you won’t get repeatable results.
- Marinate the pineapple! Let the flavors soak into the pineapple and it will return the effort with dividends! The sweet spot for pineapple is 15-30 minutes. My general rule of them? I throw the pineapple in the marinade and by the time the grill is ready, the pineapple is as well.
- Don’t be afraid of char. When sugars hit high heat, there will be some natural, delicious charred bits on the pineapple. If you’re like me and love the char, use the leftover marinade from the recipe below and baste the pineapple throughout the cooking process 🤤
How Long to Grill Pineapple
Grilling the pineapple for 7-8 minutes per side at 350°F is ideal (for 1” thick spears). This duration allows the pineapple to get that perfect caramelization without burning. If you prefer a bit of char on your grilled pineapple, baste it with the leftover marinade every 2-3 minutes during the grilling process.
What to Pair Grilled Pineapple With?
Grilled pineapple is incredibly versatile. Pair it with grilled steak, chicken, pork chops, or even fish for an amazing flavor combination. It also makes for a fantastic dessert option, especially when served with ice cream or yogurt.
